Updating your server

Introduction

When Factorio releases an update you will see it become immediately available on your PC client. This is called “alpha”.

When the “alpha” version is updated it actually takes a bit of time to align with the “headless” version (this is your server version).

Prerequisites / Disclaimers

This guide applies to you if you run a Factorio server with us and you need to update your server.

Purpose

To teach you how to update your Factorio server so that your client version can join and to understand that not all updates come out instantly for servers.

Procedure

  1. Take note of the latest version available by:

    1. Open this link by clicking here.

    2. Notice the alpha version says something like 2.0.60

    3. Now check the headless version and see if it matches the alpha version

  2. Does the alpha and headless version not match? This means that the game developer has not yet released the latest version to the headless servers.

    1. You will have to be patient and check within a few hours, this is entirely out of our control. Game updates from Factorio take a bit of time to push to all channels.

  3. Does the alpha and headless version match? This means that your game client and your server with us can be on the same version. You can proceed by updating your server by following below.

  4. To update your server, first you must stop it.


  5. Next go to File Manager


  6. Browse to the saves folder and download 1 copy of your gamesave.zip and as a backup measure the _autosave1.zip


  7. Make sure the files have downloaded to your computer

  8. Next you want to reinstall the server by clicking on Server Actions from the sidebar

    1. Once you are in the Server Actions page click on Reinstall Server


  9. You may need to refresh your page in 5 minutes, if it still hasn’t finished, give it 15 minutes or 30 minutes and so on. If you’re waiting for more than an hour please raise a support ticket for us to assist you.

  10. With the server now reinstalled you can browse back to the saves folder using File Manager

    1. Is your gamesave.zip and _autosave1.zip still appearing?

      1. Start your server and attempt to join your world.. if your data is missing or those folders are not in the File Manager’s save folder then please proceed with step b. below.

    2. Is your gamesave.zip and _autosave1.zip missing or your world gone?

      1. Open your Downloads folder on your computer

      2. Is your save over 1GB? Please use SFTP to reupload your save.

      3. Drag and drop your saves into the saves folder, wait for the upload to complete

  11. You should notice in the Console something like this once you start your server


  12. This version that appears should match the latest found on this page under the “headless” tag.


  13. Your server is now up to date according to what has been released by the game developer.
